Des: April Madness!

Okay, so I fell of the horse, BIG TIME. I was speaking to my friend Erika this weekend, though, and she mentioned something. She said she and her boyfriend were trying The Couch to 5k Running program. Taken from the official site (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml):

Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.

You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners' program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

It's easy to get impatient, and you may feel tempted to skip ahead in the program, but hold yourself back. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can. If, on the other hand, you find the program too strenuous, just stretch it out. Don't feel pressured to continue faster than you're able. Repeat weeks if needed and move ahead only when you feel you're ready.

The exact breakdown is found at: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

It all sounds manageable. More than manageable.

And what's even MORE awesome is a handy dandy podcast that I found through iTunes (and a website here: http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page4/files/category-7.html). He carefully times his music and commands with the exact instructions of the couch to 5k program.

Soooooo yes. Going to get running shoes this weekend (because I actually lack them) and wish me luck!

Just in the nick of time! I was researching gyms here in Glendale, hoping I'd convince myself to go every day after work since Nick's not home at night when I get off of work anyway...but I can't justify the expense right now. Especially since I have 2 working legs, a good pair of running shoes, and a lovely, safe, hilly, and shaded neighborhood in which to use both the shoes and my legs. But I HATE running. I hate running so much it has scared me off joining LAPD more than any other issue (how lame am I?), encouraging me to procrastinate on applying for the Park Rangers, and giving me endless excuses NOT to go.

No more! I am too young to have a flabby, pasty-white body that is so self-revolting that I won't wear skirts above the knee and cringe at the thought of sleeveless shirts!

I pledge:
By Memorial Day Weekend (May 26-28) I will be in bikini-shape. I will achieve this by commencing the Couch to 5k program no later than April 2nd, 2007. I pledge to follow the program's 3x/week schedule, and will run M-W-F. To build and tone muscle, I pledge to engage in additional exercise such as yoga, weight lifting, crunches, etc on T-Th. Beginning April 2, I will reduce (but not eliminate) my intake of processed carbohydrates and sweets, and increase my intake of leafy green vegetables and proteins. Beginning April 2, I will increase my water consumption to a minimum of 1 liter a day. I also pledge that I will not be discouraged by falling off the wagon, and that I will continue with the program and my eating goals in spite of any slip-ups that may occur during my 8 weeks. I pledge to encourage my PFC sisters in their fitness goals, and to celebrate our victories together. Furthermore, I pledge to continue running 5k two to three times a week for a period of 3 months.

Phew! I've taken a solemn vow, now I'm stuck!
